The Los Altos football team faced the Diamond Ranch Panthers in a battle for second place in league. With automatic playoff berths locked up, both teams were playing to improve their seeding in the 2017 CIF Southern Section Playoffs.
The Conquerors struggled early in all facets of the game and were unable to get anything going.The Conquerors kicked off to the Panthers to begin the game but the defense allowed Diamond Ranch to drive 65 yards down the field for an easy 7 points. Los Altos went three and out on their first drive, and a bad snap to the punter led to the Panthers taking over at the Conquerors 4 yard line. The Panthers scored on a 4 yard run to take the 14-0 lead. The Conquerors successfully held Diamond ranch to 21 points In the first half but failed to score from their five yard line.
The Conquerors first drive of the 2nd half looked promising but a few dropped passes and a sack led to a 4th and 15. The Panthers took advantage of the turnover and advanced their lead 28-0. Nothing was going right for the team, whether it was dropped passes, bad snaps, or penalties, the team never seemed to get anything going. Senior linebacker and heart of the defense Gil Vasquez commented about the defense, “Defensively, we’ll make sure to be prepare for the game, personally I didn’t like the call I made last Friday I’ll make sure to make the right calls this Friday.” In addition to the porous defense, the offense struggled to score and bad protection led to many hits on Senior quarterback Kody Olmos. Junior lineman Jordan Porras commented, “We were not able to protect Kody and we could not move the ball.”
Los Altos dropped their final league game 42-6 and finished the year 7-3 (3-2 in the Hacienda League). With a third place finish, the Conquerors are playoff eligible and will hit the road for the first round of the Division 5 Playoffs where they will take on a tough Moorpark team on Friday at 7pm. Moorpark High School is located at 4500 Tierra Rejada Rd, Moorpark 93021. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children and students.
