With the winter basketball season coming up, the Los Altos girls basketball team is revved up for this upcoming 2017-2018 season. Coming off an impressive league championship and CIF quarterfinals appearance, the year’s group is a formidable team in the area looking to strike again.
This years squad returns First Team All-League guard-center combo Brenda Reyes and Ulani Rouse-Wells. While last season’s league MVP Jez Espinoza has graduated, the team looks to replace those minutes and points with sophomore transfer Madelyn Roel. Kiara Moreno, Jenica Hernandez, Danielle Pineda will all see significant minutes and team captain Tiffany Liao will be the engine that drives the squad.
To stay in tip top shape, the varsity girls basketball team not only practices daily, but also played in highly competitive tournaments to improve themselves. Even before the official winter season started, the girls basketball team played in numerous competitive tournaments across Southern California. Over the summer, the girls played in the Memorial Day Magic Tournament in Las Vegas where they placed second amongst the teams gathered there.
Behind closed doors the girls basketball team works on their game for hours. Practicing everyday, whether it be in weight room or on the track, the girls work hard to perfect their craft. Sophomore Jenica Hernandez said “we’re constantly practicing and going through tournaments to improve for our upcoming season”. The determination and motivation the girls have is evident in Senior Captain Tiffany Liao who says, “This upcoming season I hope to create stronger bonds with my teammates and work with them to achieve our goals as a team”.
Hopes and expectations are high for this season. When asked if there was pressure, Senior Tiffany Liao says, “Honestly, there is no pressure. As long as we work hard and approach every game with the same mindset, we will be fine”. Liao, Brenda Reyes, and Ulani Rouse-Wells are all returning Seniors looking to close out their final season with a bang. The season starts with the team competing in three consecutive tournaments: the Bertha Mata Tournament at Whittier High School, the Savanna/Mayfair Tournament beginning December 20th and the Garden Grove Tournament after Christmas. The Lady Conquerors defeated Citrus Hill 50-22 in the season opener on Monday and look to continue that dominance throughout the season.
