Los Altos senior Sam Gomez realized the ultimate experience, throwing a perfect game in Thursday’s 12-0 victory over Diamond Ranch.
Gomez struck out 12 of the 21 batters he faced and needed only 72 pitches to complete the job. He improved to a perfect 5-0 on the season while dropping his impressive ERA to 1.00.
“I was pretty surprised,” Gomez said of the perfect game. “As soon as I got the final strikeout the whole team jumped on me. I got that bucket of water and it felt so good.”
The left-handed hurler showed pin-point control throughout the game, and finished as hot as he started, striking out five of the final six batters he faced. Only two Panthers batters were retired on fly ball outs.
“We’ve had a long week of playing games and everyone was tired, but we had this one more league game before (spring) break,” Gomez said. “I warmed up and felt really good and the balls that were hit my defense was great and did its job.
“We hit the ball too and once I got that big league and knew things were going well I was focused on not wanting to give up any hits. I just kept working and I’m thankful for my team for helping me have this day.”
The Conquerors had a terrific day on the offensive side as they collected 22 hits off of three Diamond Ranch pitchers. Hector Bautista had a double and a triple with Luis Barcenas and Esteban Castro each driving in two runs.
The victory keeps Los Altos (8-4, 4-0) in first-place in the Hacienda League standings.
