The Conqueror Softball team has once again silenced all those questioning whether or not their state and national rankings are warranted. The Lady Conquerors traveled to Irvine over Spring Break to compete against some of Orange County’s best teams in the Alan Dugard Classic hosted by Woodbridge High School.
In the first 2 games of the tournament, the Conquerors outscored their opponents 18-0 as they shutout Peninsula and Burbank. Next, the Conquerors took on host school Woodbridge and defeated them 6-2 to earn a semifinal berth. In the semifinal game, Los Altos took on a very good Marina team. The Conquerors did their scoring early with a 2-run home run from Mikayla Ceballos and an RBI single from Jocylyn Vidal. That was enough for pitcher Savannah Diederich as she held Marina to two runs and stranded the tying run on base to end the game and move on to the tournament final.
The Lady Conquerors next took on perennial power Mater Dei in the final. The game started off a little rough as Mater Dei came out firing on all cyclinders and scored 4 runs in the first inning. The Conquerors regained their bearings and clawed their way back into the game in the 5th inning. The 5th inning rally began with singles from Bailey Chavez and Melissa Felix, followed by a hit-by-pitch from Kelly Monroy. Jocylyn Vidal’s grounder scored Chavez and Brianna Santos followed up with a 2-RBI single to cut the deficit to 1. In the 6th, the Conquerors took the lead on a botched squeeze play as Bailey Chavez managed to avoid the tag at the plate with an amazing slide. Brianna Santos continued her hot hitting with her 3rd hit of the day that scored 2 runs, giving Santos 4 RBI on the day. The 3-run lead was plenty for Savannah Diederich as she shut down the Monarchs in the 6th and 7th to seal the victory and the tournament title.
The Lady Conquerors start Hacienda League play this week against Diamond Ranch on Tuesday and Walnut on Thursday.
