The past four seasons, when the subject of Los Altos basketball was brought up, there was one name associated with the team-Jarod Lucas. The mega-talented shooting guard, who became the CIF-SS all-time leading scorer, is now at Oregon State.
One thing the Conquerors will not lack this season is experience. Longtime coach Jeff Lucas welcomes back three-year varsity players Dion Porter, Devin Lewis and Christian Cavanias.
The newest headliner for the team is one of the top big men in the state, freshman Jazz Gardner. He is the son of former Blair and South Hills coach Jelani Gardner.
Jazz initially enrolled at Damien in the fall, but the family decided to have him transfer to Los Altos before the start of the season.
How good is Gardner? Respected basketball guru Frank Burlison labeled the 6-foot 9 center as one of the best prospects in the state for the class of 2023. Gardner, who played for the Compton Magic during the summer, provides an intimidating presence in the low post and can consistently make baskets from the perimeter.
The Conquerors won their season opener last night 75-49 over Torrance and will be back in action on Thursday against Bishop Amat in the 2nd round of the Cantwell Tournament.
