Multiple Teams · Conquerors Star Back Rushes for 5 Touchdowns Against Newport Harbor

By Damien Alvarado ~ Conqueror Sports Reporter

Newport Harbor was no match for Los Altos’ main weapon, Senior running back Tyler Nevens, in Friday nights Non-Conference game. Newport’s Senior running back Cole Kinder broke out for three touchdowns but the Conquerors defense came up big in the fourth.

Los Altos came off a 42-34 victory over Glendora last week and came into this game with a 4-0 record. The Conquerors worked all week preparing for Newport’s solid linemen, switching guys around at practice. The goal for this week was to go into league being 5-0 and enjoy a sweet victory over the bye week.

The Sailors received the ball in the first half, and drove down the field kicking a field goal for an easy 3 points. The Conquerors inability to move the ball at the beginning of the first quarter allowed the Sailors to block Senior Hunter White’s punt. Newport’s Cole Kinder rushed into the end zone for a 7 yard touchdown giving Newport a 9-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Conquerors drove down the field at the beginning of the first quarter giving Tyler Nevens his first touchdown of the half. A sluggish Conqueror defense allowed Kinder to break out for a 30 yard touchdown giving Newport a 16-8 lead at half. Quarterback Kody Olmos made key throws down the stretch and was not fazed at all. “I just played my game, mistakes will happen in the game but I block that out and focused on what this team had to do in order to win”.

Tyler Nevens turned on the gears in the second half rushing for a 75 yard and a 60 yard touchdown. Nevens finished the game with 242 rushing yards and five touchdowns. “It is truly a blessing man, me and our team have come a long way from last year, we went 5-5 with no playoffs. That’s just our motivation man, we keep striving to get better every day. Next week we have a bye week, it is pretty much our hell week, we got to go through that and go into league with a bang.” The Conquerors defense made a huge stop securing the lead allowing Nevens to rush for his final score.

A Conqueror squad who lost close ones last year didn’t have the same problem tonight. Nevens said, “We learned from our mistakes, from the past two years from the CIF Championship and the 5-5 season we learned from our mistakes and that’s why we came out there today”. Junior Quarterback Kody Olmos finished the game going 11-18 with 136 yards and an interception. Olmos said, “This game was close till the end but our defense did their part, allowing us to hand off to Tyler for the go ahead score”.

The Los Altos Conquerors secured a victory over Newport Harbor Sailors with a final score of 35-23. The Conquerors go into their bye week 5-0 and play their first league game at home against Diamond Ranch October 7 at 7pm.
